14 Aug 5 Friyays – August 14
Hey, gang – it’s Dr. Erin here! It’s been another eventful week in the decade of August (as I am now referring to months). This week I’ll be celebrating some historic announcements, upcoming anniversaries, and some seriously hilarious Twitter content. Let’s get Friyaying (is that a thing? I’m making it a thing)!
Regardless of your politics (though we are fairly obviously slanted liberal here at AR HQ) – this week saw the historic announcement of Senator Kamala Harris as the VP candidate on the Democratic Party ticket. This move makes Harris the first Black woman VP candidate for a major party ticket. We spend a lot of time talking about the importance of representation, and we celebrate the joy for all the Black women and girls, and children of immigrants who see themselves in this historic choice.
Honoring the Past
In her statement, Senator Harris recognized all the women who came before her – fighting for recognition, representation, and equality. Many Black women cited the legendary Shirley Chisholm as a vanguard and visionary leader in their reaction to Biden’s announcement. Chisholm was the first Black woman elected to Congress, and the first woman and Black person to run for President. Check out this fab interview with her from the Center for American Women and Politics to learn a bit more about her.
Speaking of Women’s Rights
We are quickly approaching the 100 year anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment – which gave women the right to vote. Though the 19th did not discriminate on the basis of race – many laws across the country, including the Jim Crow laws in the South, prevented Black women from achieving suffrage for 45 more years. Indigenous women were not recognized as full citizens for another 5 years after the ratification of the 19th. We’ll be talking a lot about suffrage this month – and it’s glaring lack of intersectionality. I haven’t even watched all of this video yet but I’ve learned so much.
Speaking of Indigenous Folks
Great news on the representation front for Native folks on TV. The Peacock platform announced the production of ‘Rutherford Falls’ which will feature a Native show runner as well as 4 Indigenous writers in the writers room. I cannot wait to see Indians portrayed authentically on TV – hopefully it will start a positive trend toward more authentic representation!
Hilarious Hockey Twitter
This week started the first round of the NHL playoffs (with teams bubbled in Toronto and Edmonton). Tuesday afternoon’s game turned into Tuesday night’s game when the Tampa Bay Lightning and Columbus Blue Jackets played the 4th longest game in playoff history, going all the way into 5 overtimes. As you can imagine – this left a lot of fodder for the teams, the teams that were supposed to play at 8pm EST, and the NHL. Some of the funniest tweets I’ve seen all year came that night – and I wanted to end the week with some funny! Here’s a small sample below:
The CVS receipt reference killed me! I hope you enjoyed my Friyays for this week. As ever, Dr. Kristen will be back next week. Be sure to check out our Suffrage Centenary coverage – including our discussion of the ‘And Nothing Less’ podcast – hosted by Rosario Dawson and Retta – starting next week! Happy weekend, all!
