5 Friyays: August 16

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to my 5 Friyays for the week that was. Dr. Donnelly and I were together for the whole last week, and so we had a few good Friyay ideas along our weekend together. I’m pretty happy with my list, it was the easiest one I’ve done in a while, so let’s crack on!

Simone Biles. That’s it. That’s the post.

If you missed what this PHENOMENAL HUMAN did at the weekend, here’s a short video to recap. In addition to being the best gymnast in the world, she called out truth to power and spoke openly about the damage done to her and other gymnasts by USA Gymnastics. Absolute hero.

Lady Gaga Brings Some Much Needed Hope

After the mass shootings in Gilroy, CA, El Paso, TX, and Dayton, OH, it was hard for me to find hope for a few days. I was delighted to see that Lady Gaga is channeling her hurt into hope when she announced last week that she would be funding over 160 classroom programs in these 3 cities. We’ve got a lot of work to do, but giving money to help children express themselves and be creative is no small thing.

More Musical Love

Dr. Donnelly and I were in NYC on Saturday for a conference, so naturally, us two Broadway nuts took in a show. We saw the musical adaptation of Baz Lurhman’s 2001 classic film ‘Moulin Rouge!’ It was joy, pure and simple. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who might want to see it, but I loved every second and it gave me so much faith and hope in the goodness of humans. I mean, check out the theater, God’s sake. All we need is truth, beauty, freedom, and love.

Keeping the Tzotzil Culture Alive

Dr. Donnelly shared this article with me. I was fascinated to learn about Taller Leñateros – Mexico’s first and only Tzotzil Maya book and paper making collective. It’s a remarkable story of a group of women determined to preserve traditional stories, materials, and processes, while advocate for recognition of their indigenous history.

Who wants to learn about glass blowing?

I wouldn’t have answered that question in the affirmative, but this past Sunday Dr. Donnelly and I binged the first season of the Netflix show ‘Blown Away.’ It’s basically the Great British Bake Off of glass blowing, and we were captivated. Check out the trailer and check out the show if you think it might be your cup of tea. I’m really hoping for a Season 2!

That’s all I’ve got for this week! Dr. Donnelly will be back to close out August! Have a great weekend!
