5 Friyays: December 28

Welcome to the last Friyays of 2018! My week has been full of celebrating and family, with some other moments of joy. Below are the pieces of this week that apply to more than me – or are even a little shareable! Sadly, you all couldn’t have the fun of watching Muppet Christmas Carol as my family turned it into a sing-along, so these five will have to suffice.

Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series

It’s no secret that I love reading and that I love reading from the wide and wonderful Romancelandia. I read so many good books this year, but this week I wanted to pull out some old favorites. About a sprawling family of eight children in Regency England, Quinn’s Bridgerton family is a staple. Each child get their own book and each love story is so full realized and delightful. I’m not the only one who thinks so, by the way, because Shonda Rhimes is currently developing it as a series for Netflix!

Liverpool Football Club

Currently, Liverpool is the top of the table in the Premiere League. This means zero to most of you, but means a ton to me and my fellow Reds. Here, in celebration, is my favorite video of our anthem – Rogers and Hammerstein’s “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.

The Kennedy Center Honors

Sure, there are a thousand award shows honoring artists, but the KCH’s are my favorite because they acknowledge how art shapes our culture. No art is created or performed or consumed in a vacuum and I’m grateful each year that we take time to acknowledge that. I have certainly disagreed with some in the past – but this year I think the honors are spot on.

Hallmark Holiday Movies

This really shouldn’t be surprising, considering our continuing coverage of them, but I love watching these, yelling at them, talking back to the characters, and swooning just a bit at the final kisses (but only sometimes, because sometimes I don’t care).

Derry Girls

My favorite show of the whole year is now on Netflix! A sitcom about five teenagers in Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland in the 1990s, I haven’t laughed this hard or felt this homesick in a long time. We made a quick primer on the context, so give that a gander before you dive in. Below is one of my favorite clips from the pilot.

That’s a wrap on 2018, everyone! We’ll see you next week for a fresh start to a fresh year.
