17 Jul 5 Friyays – July 17
Hey all! It’s Dr. Erin here with my 5 Friyays for the week that was. There’s a lot of bad news out there these days, but I managed to find some bright spots. The majority of my list is made up of Indigenous news – it’s been a big week for Indian Country!
The Team from Washington Gets a New Name
Following the recent Supreme Court decision upholding Muscogee Creek reservation land in Oklahoma, we saw the announcement on Monday that the NFL Washington team is going to change their racist name. The R-word is a racial slur – and after decades of Indian activists and some serious pressure from sponsorship, Washington leadership made the call. Stereotypical and offensive Indian mascots have been a longstanding problem in this country – it was good news to see some big change coming!
The History of Indian Mascots
If you aren’t sure where these mascots come from, or why they are racist and offensive, Indian Country Today has done the work for you. Indigenous folks are not our mascots, nor is any race or ethnicity. There’s also a list of other campaigns to have Indian mascots changed, so get to signing! There’s even a documentary about Native mascots called ‘More than a Word’ that’s currently being offered for free!
New Classroom Art
Also this week – IllumiNatives and Amplifier Art launched a new series of posters and lesson plans highlighting contemporary Indigenous folks and their contributions to society. They are gorgeously created and extensive in their lesson plans. One of the ways we can ensure we don’t repeat the racist history of our country is through education.
Hamilton Town Hall
With all the new Hamilton content dropping after the release of the musical on Disney+, it’s been easy pickings for my Friyays. This interview with most of the original cast was super fun and gave great insights into the inner workings of the musical.
Hot Guy Builds a PC
You might think I’m kidding, but honestly folks, it’s been a rough year. One of the internet delights this week was Henry Cavill releasing his homemade video of building his new gaming PC. You’re welcome.
That’s a wrap on my Friyays – I hope you’ve laughed, cried, and learned something. Dr. Kristen will be back next week! Be safe and be well!
