5 Friyays: June 14

5 Friyays: June 14

Happy Friday, y’all! But most importantly, a VERY happy birthday to my partner-in-crime and many other things, Dr. Hinson! She’s celebrating in Northern Ireland and I’m celebrating in Norway, and this post is a bit of a celebration of her, too. Every relationship has a soundtrack, and I’ve picked five of the ones off of ours that also happen to be GREAT summer road trip tunes to bop to as you head down the shore.

Bastille “Pompeii”

This is also the unofficial national anthem for Northern Ireland, but one of my favorite life memories with Erin is driving through the Ring of Kerry in 2015, scream singing this at the top of our lungs.

Sara Bareilles “Armor”

This is clearly a new entry and if you’ve read any of our Friyays in the last few months then you’ve heard us rave about this tune. Well, here I am, raving again.

Icona Pop “I Love It”

Scream singing this at my brother’s wedding in a circle with two of our other best friends is an enduring memory. But also? This was one of the tunes of the summer of 2012 in Belfast and I honestly have no idea if it was over in the States. It makes ZERO sense, but it is SUPER fun to sing as you’re driving.

Bonnie Tyler “Total Eclipse of the Heart”

We sang this at karaoke the night before my wedding in 2014 and we slayed it, thank you very much. But honestly? Is there a better road trip tune to do a duet with? No.

fun. “We Are Young”

This is the song that introduced me to Janelle Monae (thank you, fun.) but also was the song we sang nearly constantly in the year of our Lord 2012 as Erin wrote her masters’ thesis and I sorted my PhD and we sat in our kitchens cooking food with our friends. It’s still an understood that when it comes on the radio, we pause any conversation and sing along word for word.

~*~

In all seriousness and in a moment of selfishness, I hope you all have someone in your life that is an unmitigated gift the way Erin is in mine. Happiest of days, E. I hope you are having the absolute craic in our mutual hometown.
