5 Friyays: October 25

Hey all! It’s Dr. Erin here with my 5 Friyays! It’s been a hectic week but there were a couple gems I found along the way that are perfect for my Friyays! Let’s get to it!

Human Rights in Northern Ireland

Midnight Monday saw the passing of a deadline for the implementation of liberalized abortion rights and legalized same sex marriage in Northern Ireland. It was a joyous day for many people, who have worked for decades to see their rights put in line with the rest of the UK. I found this report from Northern Visions TV which spoke to many activists on each issue. I laughed, I cried, I celebrated with my brothers and sisters!!

The Crown is Coming!!

Monday also saw the release of the full trailer for Season 3 of The Crown! Dr. Kristen and I couldn’t be more excited and were so happy to see more of Olivia Colman and Helena Bonham-Carter – plus insights into what the season will cover!! If you don’t already know, we do episode by episode analysis of the show – and you can catch up with our coverage of Seasons 1 and 2 here!

The Mash-Up to End All Mash-Ups

Ever wonder what Lizzo would sound like if Mumford and Sons sang ‘Truth Hurts?’ No? Me neither, but I didn’t know what I was missing. If you don’t want to watch the whole video (which is a fascinating showcase of how Ali works her magic) check out the last 3 minutes and be happy!! I found this YouTube channel this week and know I will waste many, many hours checking out her videos!

“I don’t move with other people, I just move with myself.”

Since this is an unofficial Lizzo fan site, why not include another video? Pretty much every quote in this extended interview from CBS’ Sunday Morning earlier this month should be stitched on a pillow. Lizzo is a hero, a superstar, and a champion of humans. That is all.

“The ‘broken rung’ is the biggest obstacle women face.”

I’m not a huge fan of the LeanIn movement but it has to be said that they amount of money they are investing in women’s workplace issues is no small thing. Last week saw the release of the Women in the Workplace 2019 report. It’s not surprising that the report found that the so-called ‘broken-rung’ or the first step up to manager, is the biggest obstacle women face at work. Read more from the report (and years past) here. There’s lots of work to be done – so let’s get to it!

Those are my Friyays for the week that was! Dr. Kristen will be up next week for the first Friyays of November! Where did the year go? Seriously. Someone please tell me.
