Cultural Analysis

We love to watch TV, films, and documentaries. Since we never turn off our brains, we spend a lot of time finding lessons in our favorite art forms so that we can share them with our viewers. Here's a roundup of where you can find our pop culture conversation starters.

The Handmaid's Tale

We're captivated and infuriated by Hulu's award winning adaptation of Margaret Atwood's master work The Handmaid's Tale.

As Dr. Hinson is an expert in experiences of imprisonment and Dr. Donnelly is an expert in religion and women, this show is a perfect blend of The Good Doctors' brains.

We've gone episode by episode, so put the kettle on and settle in. See you over on YouTube!

What people are saying ...

Can't tell you how much your weekly analyses of this series have meant; you've annotated each episode with extraordinary historical/anthropological (and Christian doctrine-specific) facts, and taught me so much. Abbey Research has truly raised the bar in the post-show dialog.

I watch several re-cappers and this channel really stands out. To have the social and religious aspects pointed out and explained adds a lot of depth to the story ... There's also a certain irony in two intelligent and educated women discussing the show that is really enjoyable. Thank you for your reviews, they are appreciated.

A complex analysis of this season, examining the many nooks and crannies. Much gratitude. This discussion is especially illuminating, added to all of the others, which are the best ones available to the fan base.

Just started binging HT last week and came upon this series. Thank you for such great work. It's been a nice companion to the show, and so different than what I expected to find.

This was really interesting. I am just loving your hand maids tale recaps and discussion, when ever I watch or read a powerful story I always then search out intelligent discussion on the subject. I'm now catching up with your discussions while interspersing episodes from season 3 and couldn't be happier!

Really excited to see you guys again for Handmaid's Tale. I have watched all your videos on that series though I'm not one to comment on YouTube often. I always appreciate your commentary on the deeper narratives of the show, often far deeper than the writers' at times.

The Crown

Netflix's The Crown is a gorgeous piece of drama - but does it do justice to the woman herself?

Join us as we discuss episode by episode the events covered in all four seasons of the show.

The show also gives us a great chance to talk about all the issues facing women in positions of leadership.

What people are saying ...

I just started watching this show and I am so glad I found your recaps! I have been taught next to nothing about British history. So I am so glad to hear you to talk about it!

I'm so glad you guys are doing this discussion -- I've seen other panel discussion over shows -- it's almost never good. They always spend 70% of time watching and recapping the show, and then 30% trying to "understand" the show. We get the show's plot ... we are not idiots. I appreciate how much you guys are bringing a whole lot more information to the table.

I come here after every episode to get your thoughts and more insight on the Elizabethan era ... thank you guys

I have been following ya'll since Season 1, and I need to say thank you for giving me more knowledge about British history. Helped me sooo much while I was watching the show.

I am only now catching up with The Crown, so I have many seasons and episodes to look forward to, so I was lucky to come across your video blog. I enjoyed your insights into the dynamics involved in this episode, not just from a feminist perspective, but from the perspective of professional respect and courtesy. I look forward to continuing the journey with you into future episodes.

I love your content! Especially the Crown review videos. Your channel is meaningful, inspiring and insightful, most of all so much fun to listen to. Sending you love from Taiwan!

We are HUGE fans of romance novels, Julia Quinn, and her Bridgerton book series!

Over the moon at the creation of the Netflix show Bridgerton, we're delighted to explore issues of femininity, feminism, agency, gender, family, and love in Regency England.

The costumes are fabulous, the drama is high, and the payoffs are worth every penny. Join us for a critical discussion of the romance genre, and Bridgerton's adaptation of it!

What people are saying ...

I totally can relate to Dr. Kristen I've been reading historical romances since I was fourteen and it's been an over 30yr love affair. I'm thoroughly enjoying your commentary and all the finer points being missed by new comers to this genre.

Thanks so much for this video - this whole thing has been wrecking my brain. Your joint knowledge about the books is greatly appreciated for context.

I've never been a big romance reader and never read these books but I really really enjoyed this show and am considering looking into the genre a little more. I'm so excited you guys recapped this and am settling in to watch every single one.

I am so excited that you are going to cover Bridgerton! I haven't read the books yet, but based on your recommendation, I definitely will. Thanks for your awesome content.

Ladies, thank you both so much for this commentary! I fully agree, and as an experienced reader of romance, it was problematic but not traumatic to the degree that so many are saying. I thought was the only one who thought this way!

The Bridgerton recaps are so fun. All the tropes I didn't even notice! Or didn't really think much of. You two are giving me life.

Online Streaming Content

This playlist covers a whole host of pop culture content. Filling in time between our regular shows - we found sitcoms, dramas, films, and documentaries of interest.

We talk about pretty much anything you can find on an online streaming service.

Head on over for reviews of shows like Derry Girls, GLOW, Unbelievable, and Mrs. America; plus loads of films and documentaries!

Join us in 2021 for coverage of much more fantastic and engaging content!

What people are saying ...

Your recap here and commentary is so empathetic and reasonable, it almost feels like it should be a standard after watch.

Wonderful review, ladies!

I'm so happy to see that this is being reviewed by the two of you! I've watched the series in it's entirety & felt it was very well put together. Thank you both for your time into such an important topic!

I just saw "Derry Girls" yesterday on Netflix and loved it. Thank you for explaining about the conflict. My husband assumed it was a religious war.

GLOW is Amazing.  Lovely to see the Good Doctors reviewing something that isn`t just a slog through (gorgeously shot) distilled human misery for a change!  Looking Very Much Forward to this series.

A fascinating review of our Netflix documentary "ReMastered - The Miami Showband Massacre" by #TheGoodDoctors and well worth watching.

Colonizer's World Tour

Inspired by Shuri from Black Panther, we're spending 2021 taking a deep dive into the legacy of colonialism around the world.

The more time we spend exploring different cultures, the more we see the ongoing legacy of colonial policies and practices still operating in these cultures.

Join us for our world tour! We're producing 101 intro videos to each location and discussing one piece of art - whether movie, documentary, or whatever we can get our hands on!

Pack a bag, it should be quite the trip!

Hallmark Christmas Movies

Predictable, yes. Delightful, usually.

We are fans of happily ever afters here at Abbey Research, so we've decided to chat about one of America's biggest collections of them - Hallmark Holiday Movies!

Join The Good Doctors as we lovingly snark on the insane amounts of garland, empty coffee cups, cringy dialogue, and swoony kisses.

More movies coming in Fall/Winter 2021!

What people are saying ...

Ok ladies, I just discovered you because the company that filmed 'One Royal Holiday' posted this on Facebook. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who appreciates Tveit (see my profile pic). Been a major fan since 2009.

You are so right! Two Turtles Doves is the BEST Hallmark movie ever! I've watched it about 30 times already.

I'm looking forward to the Christmas movies. I'm excited to hear your take on the most traditional of the holiday films, particularly the Christmas Carol, and how women have been historically portrayed in our holiday myths.
