Happy Birthday Blog – Frances Ellen Watkins Harper

Happy Birthday Blog – Frances Ellen Watkins Harper

In our back-to-back Black suffragist birthday blogs, today we’re celebrating Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. Born in Baltimore, MD in 1825, Frances had a long list of descriptors after her name. Not only a suffragist, Harper was a staunch abolitionist, public speaker, poet, and teacher. She’s an American icon left out of most history books. Learn more about her through this exhibit performance of her 1875 address to the Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery, performed at the National Constitution Center this August.

Keep an eye out for our continuing celebration of suffragists of all color throughout the year and into 2021!

Happy birthday, Frances!
